The Senate passed a government funding bill with changes demanded by Democrats concerned about immigration enforcement and sent it to the House as lawmakers work to avoid an extended shutdown.

WASHINGTON — Most of the U.S. government shut down as the clock ticked over to Saturday, Jan. 31, but the funding lapse is expected to be brief.

That would require a strong bipartisan vote with substantial support from both Republicans and Democrats to send the bill to President Donald Trump's desk for his signature.
