Forecasters are warning of a sprawling winter storm that's predicted to spread a mess of ice and snow over a 2,000 mile stretch of the nation.
There is roughly a 50% chance of more than four inches of snow north of I‑40, with a 30–40% chance to the south, wrote the weather service in their morning discussion. The highest probabilities fall in the three to eight‑inch range for much of the area.

Here's the general thinking as of Tuesday morning. Our northern and northwestern counties should see a faster changeover from freezing rain to mostly sleet and snow, whereas the I20 corridor will see more freezing rain and sleeting before a changeover. Our southern counties are at the greatest risk of seeing ice accumulations.
A long stretch of wintry weather is continuing across much of central and northern New York, with the most serious impacts concentrated east of Lake Ontario and across parts of the southwest Adirondacks.
Another quick burst of snow is expected overnight Wednesday as a secondary disturbance sweeps across Michigan. This will mainly impact neighborhoods south of Lansing, putting down around 1" of additional snowfall before daybreak Thursday. Lows Wednesday night will fall to the middle teens.
